Anthropic Just Took Over an Entire Data Center. Here’s What That Actually Means.
Anthropic didn’t lease part of a data center. They leased all of it. The 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and 300 MW of capacity inside SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee — 100% of it — now belongs to Anthropic. That is the single most important fact buried inside what looked, at first glance, like a routine compute partnership announcement.

1. The Compute Was Sitting Idle — and Anthropic Got It All
Colossus 1 went up in Memphis in late 2024, built at a pace that genuinely surprised people who track data center construction. It houses mostly H100s, runs at 300 megawatts, and was XAI’s flagship cluster. The problem: XAI had already moved its own model training to Colossus 2, a newer Blackwell-based cluster containing around 550,000 GPUs. That left Colossus 1 generating heat and electricity bills without a primary tenant.

Elon confirmed this in his announcement tweet, writing that he “was okay leasing Colossus 1 to Anthropic, as SpaceX AI had already moved training to Colossus 2.” That framing is doing a lot of work. It positions the deal as a logical handoff rather than a strategic pivot — but the effect is the same either way. Anthropic now has access to one of the largest deployed AI supercomputers on the planet, and they have it immediately, not in 18 months when some new facility comes online.
Tom Brown, one of Anthropic’s founders, put it plainly on Twitter: “Grateful to be partnering with SpaceX. We’re going to need to move a lot of atoms in order to keep up with AI demand, and there’s nobody better at quickly moving atoms on or off planet Earth.”
2. The Rate Limit Increases Are Real and Already Live
Three specific changes went into effect the day the deal was announced. First, Claude Code’s 5-hour rate limit was doubled for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based enterprise plans. Second, the peak hour usage reduction on Claude Code was eliminated entirely for Pro and Max accounts — meaning the system that throttled you during business hours is gone. Third, API rate limits for Opus models were raised substantially across all tiers.
The API numbers are worth quoting directly. Tier 1 max input tokens per minute went from 30,000 to 500,000. Tier 2 went from 450,000 to 2 million. Tier 3 from 800,000 to 5 million. Tier 4 from 2 million to 10 million. That’s not a marginal improvement — Tier 1 alone is a 16x increase.
Anthropic’s head of growth noted that only a small percentage of users hit weekly limits, while a much larger share hit the 5-hour limit. So they fixed the 5-hour limit first, with weekly limits presumably next as more compute comes online. That’s a sensible sequencing, even if it leaves some heavy users still wanting more.
3. Dario’s 80x Number Explains Why This Deal Had to Happen
Dario Amodei disclosed something remarkable at Anthropic’s developer event: “We planned for a world of 10x growth per year. In Q1 2026, we saw 80x annualized growth per year in revenue and usage.”
That number explains everything. Anthropic made a deliberate bet a few years ago to be conservative on capital expenditure — to not race OpenAI into debt acquiring GPUs. Dario’s reasoning was that if AI demand didn’t materialize at the right pace, over-leveraging on compute would threaten the company’s existence. That was a defensible call in 2022 and 2023. By 2026, it had become a serious constraint. You can’t serve 80x demand growth on infrastructure built for 10x.
The Colossus deal is the emergency pressure valve. It doesn’t solve the long-term compute problem — for that, Anthropic has a separate 5 GW deal with Amazon AWS (with nearly 1 GW coming online by end of 2026), a 5 GW deal with Google and Broadcom (coming online in 2027), and a $30 billion Azure capacity deal with Microsoft and Nvidia. But those deals are months or years away. Colossus 1 is on now.
Understanding why Anthropic’s compute shortage got so severe helps contextualize why a deal of this speed and scale was necessary — and why the rate limit changes happened the same day the announcement dropped.
4. The Cursor Situation Is Genuinely Complicated
A few weeks before the Anthropic deal, Cursor announced a partnership with SpaceX to use Colossus infrastructure for model training. Their post was enthusiastic: “Each step up in compute has translated to meaningfully more capable models. We’ve wanted to push our training efforts much further, but we’ve been bottlenecked by compute.”
Then Anthropic took all of Colossus 1.
The resolution, based on Elon’s follow-up tweet, is that Cursor is now on Colossus 2 alongside XAI’s own training work. SpaceX reportedly has an option to acquire Cursor later in 2026 for $60 billion, or pay a $10 billion breakup fee. That option structure is interesting: it keeps Cursor motivated to perform without requiring an immediate acquisition, and it gives SpaceX a coding model play without fully committing.
Whether Cursor’s founders feel comfortable about this arrangement — their compute partner just handed their cluster to a competitor’s primary inference provider — is a different question. The $10 billion breakup fee suggests someone anticipated the relationship might get complicated.
5. Elon’s Reversal Is Stranger Than It Looks
As recently as March 2026, Elon was tweeting “Is there a more hypocritical company than Anthropic?” and calling them “missanthropic.” He had Grok generate a “vulgar roast” of Dario. He accused Anthropic of stealing training data. He called their safety posture sanctimonious.
Then, in the span of what appears to be a single week of meetings, he went to 20 million views on a tweet saying: “Everyone I met was highly competent and cared a great deal about doing the right thing. No one set off my evil detector.”
The most honest read of this is probably the simplest one: Elon had a warehouse full of GPUs generating costs without revenue, and Anthropic had demand it couldn’t serve. The enemy-of-my-enemy framing — that helping Anthropic hurts OpenAI, which Elon is currently suing — adds another layer of motivation. But the business logic alone is sufficient. Chamath Palihapitiya had actually predicted something like this on the All-In podcast weeks earlier, noting that XAI’s excess capacity gave Elon “a huge lane to run through” in the compute market, and that “he and Dario should do a deal tomorrow.”
They did.
6. XAI Is Being Dissolved — and That’s the Bigger Story
Buried in Elon’s announcement was a line that got less attention than it deserved: XAI will be dissolved as a separate company and rebranded as SpaceX AI.
This isn’t just a naming change. It’s a strategic repositioning. XAI was built as a model company — a competitor to OpenAI and Anthropic on the model layer. That bet didn’t pay off. Grok is a decent model, but it’s not in the same tier as Claude Opus or GPT-5 for the use cases that matter most to enterprise buyers. The personnel story was also rough: co-founders left one after another, and Elon acknowledged the company “wasn’t built right the first time.”
What SpaceX does have is extraordinary hardware execution. Colossus 1 came online faster than most observers thought possible. Terrafab, Elon’s chip manufacturing project in Texas, reportedly now has a projected cost of $55 to $119 billion — far higher than earlier estimates, but also far more credible now that Anthropic represents a guaranteed source of demand.

The pivot is from model builder to compute provider. As one observer put it: Elon’s AI play 1.0 was as an OpenAI founder. 2.0 was as a model builder. 3.0 is as a compute infrastructure company. SpaceX’s core competency is getting things into orbit cheaply and reliably. If the demand for compute continues to outstrip terrestrial power and land constraints, orbital data centers stop being science fiction and start being an engineering problem. Elon has been bullish on this for years. Anthropic, by signing onto the language, is at minimum signaling they’re not dismissing it.
Whether it happens in 3 years or 15 is genuinely unclear. But the fact that both parties put it in writing is worth tracking.
What the Infrastructure Stack Actually Looks Like Now
Zoom out and Anthropic’s compute picture looks like this: Colossus 1 (live now), Amazon AWS up to 5 GW (nearly 1 GW by end of 2026), Google/Broadcom 5 GW (2027), and $30 billion in Azure capacity from Microsoft and Nvidia. That’s a company that went from compute-constrained to having commitments across every major infrastructure provider in roughly one quarter.
