Fact 1: XAI Built a Supercluster It Couldn’t Fill

Colossus 1 was announced with enormous fanfare in late 2024. Elon stood it up in record time — genuinely impressive logistics — and it became one of the largest AI compute clusters on the planet. The problem is that Grok, XAI’s flagship model, never became the model that enterprises or developers actually defaulted to. When you look at where the serious workloads go, they go to Claude, GPT, and Gemini. Grok is a decent model, but it’s not in that conversation.

The Anthropic deal is the obvious solution. You have compute with no demand. Anthropic has demand with no compute. The math is simple even if the politics are not. It’s also worth noting that Colossus 1 was built with speed as the primary constraint — Elon’s team prioritized getting it online fast over optimizing for a specific workload profile. That means the hardware is general-purpose enough to run Anthropic’s training and inference jobs without significant retooling. The transition cost is lower than it would be with a more specialized cluster.


Fact 2: Anthropic Was Genuinely Compute-Constrained

This isn’t just Anthropic being opportunistic. They were in real trouble on the infrastructure side. The context behind Anthropic’s compute shortage has been building for a while — Claude’s usage limits have been a persistent complaint from developers and power users, and the reason is straightforward: Anthropic underinvested in compute relative to its model quality and demand growth.

The reason this number is now credible where it wasn’t before is demand. Back in March, even if you believed Elon could execute the construction, the demand case was thin. Here’s the opinion: this deal is Elon making a rational bet that the model race is effectively over for XAI as a standalone competitor, and that the smarter play is to become the infrastructure layer for whoever wins.

That’s not a failure. That’s a pivot. And it’s the kind of pivot that can be enormously valuable. AWS didn’t win by having the best consumer product. It won by being the substrate.

The enemy-of-my-enemy framing — Elon helping Anthropic to hurt OpenAI, given the ongoing Musk-Altman lawsuit — is probably part of the calculation too. Elon called Anthropic “missanthropic” and “the most hypocritical company” as recently as March 2026. He said “winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic.” Weeks later, he signed a deal giving them his entire data center. That’s not a contradiction if you understand that the goal was never to help Anthropic — it was to monetize idle compute while simultaneously giving Anthropic the resources to compete harder against OpenAI.

Whether that strategy plays out depends on a lot of variables. Can Terrafab actually get built? Will Anthropic’s revenue growth sustain the $200 billion Google commitment? Does the Colossus 2 buildout — which is still running Grok training — give XAI/SpaceX enough model capability to stay relevant? These are open questions. The one thing that seems clear is that the old framing — Elon vs. Sam, XAI vs. OpenAI, model vs. model — is no longer the right lens. The competition has moved to infrastructure, and Elon just made his move.

The medium-term question is what the Google Cloud commitment means for Claude’s model development trajectory. Anthropic was comparatively conservative on infrastructure investment relative to OpenAI. That conservatism is now being corrected aggressively. A $200 billion commitment over five years, plus the Colossus 1 capacity, plus whatever Terrafab eventually provides — that’s a very different resource picture than Anthropic had six months ago. It also changes the competitive dynamics with OpenAI in a concrete way: Anthropic can now train larger models, run more experiments in parallel, and serve more users without the capacity ceiling that was quietly constraining their roadmap.
