This is the context that makes every other Anthropic story from the past few months make sense. The compute shortage that drove Claude’s usage limits down wasn’t a product failure or a strategic blunder in isolation — it was a company that correctly identified AI demand would grow, but underestimated the magnitude by nearly an order of magnitude. Dario’s own words confirm this. They planned for 10x. They got 80x.

What Anthropic Actually Did About It

The Colossus deal with SpaceX is the most visible consequence of that growth number, but it’s worth understanding the full picture of what Anthropic has been doing to close the gap between demand and capacity.

The SpaceX partnership gives Anthropic access to the entire Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee — 220,000 Nvidia GPUs (mostly H100s), running at 300 MW capacity. Not a slice of it. Not a preferred customer arrangement. The whole thing. XAI had already moved its own training workloads to Colossus 2, which houses around 550,000 Blackwell GPUs, so the timing worked. The immediate user-facing changes from the Colossus deal were specific: Claude Code’s 5-hour rate limit was doubled for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based enterprise plans. Peak hour usage reductions on Claude Code were eliminated for Pro and Max accounts. And the API rate limits for Opus models were raised substantially — Tier 1 max input tokens per minute went from 30,000 to 500,000; Tier 2 from 450,000 to 2 million; Tier 3 from 800,000 to 5 million; Tier 4 from 2 million to 10 million.

These are not incremental adjustments. A 16x increase in Tier 1 token throughput is a different product than what existed the week before.

Why This Number Matters Beyond Anthropic

Here’s the thing about 80x growth in a single quarter: it doesn’t just describe Anthropic’s situation. It describes the state of AI demand broadly.

Anthropic is not the only company seeing this. But they’re one of the few where a CEO has put a specific number on the gap between what they expected and what actually happened. That specificity is useful.

The SpaceX deal has attracted attention mostly because of the personalities involved — Elon going from tweeting “Is there a more hypocritical company than Anthropic?” in March 2026 to praising the team and leasing his entire data center to them weeks later is genuinely strange to watch. But the more useful read is what it signals about demand. XAI had excess compute because Grock hasn’t captured the market share that would justify the infrastructure they built. Anthropic had excess demand because their models are capturing market share faster than their infrastructure can serve. The deal is comparative advantage made visible.

Chimath Palihapitiya called this shot on the All-In podcast weeks before it happened, predicting that power constraints would give Elon leverage to make AI deals and that Anthropic and SpaceX should “do a deal tomorrow.” The prediction was right not because of any special insight into the personalities, but because the underlying economics were obvious once you understood the demand picture.

Tom Brown, one of Anthropic’s founders, put it plainly in his tweet after the deal: “We’re going to need to move a lot of atoms in order to keep up with AI demand, and there’s nobody better at quickly moving atoms on or off planet Earth.” The orbital compute angle — SpaceX and Anthropic have “expressed interest in partnering to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity” — is speculative, but it’s the kind of speculation that only makes sense if you believe the demand trajectory continues.

What Builders Should Actually Do With This

If you’re building agents or workflows on top of Claude, the immediate action is straightforward: the rate limits are now materially higher, and the peak-hour restrictions are gone for Pro and Max accounts. The Tier 1 API change from 30,000 to 500,000 input tokens per minute is particularly significant for anyone building document processing or long-context applications. That’s not a 2x improvement; it’s a 16x improvement that opens up use cases that were previously impractical at scale.

For teams building multi-model workflows, the broader picture is that model availability and throughput are becoming more competitive across the board.
