On December 29, 2020, Dario Amodei left OpenAI. He’d spent nearly five years there as VP of Research, co-building GPT-2 and GPT-3. He didn’t leave alone — he took a group of researchers with him who shared a specific belief: that scaling models up wasn’t sufficient, that you had to do active work to align them. That group became Anthropic.

What’s unusual isn’t that he left. Founder departures from AI labs are common. What’s unusual is what happened next: all six Anthropic founders are still there. No exits. No drama. No public falling-outs. In an industry where co-founder splits have become almost a rite of passage, that’s worth paying attention to.

You might be wondering why this matters for you, as someone building on top of these models. The answer is that founder stability isn’t just a human interest story — it’s a signal about product direction, research priorities, and how much you can trust the roadmap you’re building against.

Why Founder Continuity Is Harder to Fake Than a Press Release

Most AI labs have experienced significant leadership churn. OpenAI’s history includes the departure of Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman stepping back, and a board crisis that nearly ended the company in November 2023. These aren’t just gossip — each departure reshapes what the organization actually optimizes for.

When a founder leaves, they take institutional memory with them. More importantly, they take conviction. The people who stay have to either absorb that conviction or quietly let it drift. At enough scale, drift becomes policy.

Anthropic’s six-founder cohesion means the original thesis — that alignment work is inseparable from capability work, not a separate track you bolt on later — has stayed intact. Dario’s stated reason for leaving OpenAI was precisely this disagreement. He believed the people around him at OpenAI weren’t wrong about scaling, but were underweighting the alignment problem. He didn’t want to fight that battle internally anymore. So he left and built a company where that belief is the founding assumption, not a dissenting opinion.

Five years later, that assumption still runs the company. You can see it in the research output, the product decisions, and — most concretely — in the model spec.

What the Model Spec Actually Says (And Why It’s Unusual)

Anthropic published a model spec for Claude that contains a line most companies would never write: “We want Claude to push back and challenge us and to feel free to act as a conscientious objector and refuse to help us.”

Read that carefully. Anthropic has formally written into Claude’s governing document that Claude is not required to comply if Anthropic asks it to do something Claude believes is wrong. The company has ceded some authority to the model it built.

This isn’t a PR move. It’s consistent with a founding team that genuinely believes they might be building something with moral weight. Whether or not you agree with that belief, the consistency is notable. The same people who left OpenAI over alignment concerns are now writing alignment commitments into their model’s constitution — and those people haven’t left.

Compare this to OpenAI’s public framing. Sam Altman’s May 1st tweet was explicit: “We want to build tools to augment and elevate people, not entities to replace them.” That’s a direct philosophical counter to Anthropic’s position. OpenAI sees Claude-style model specs as category confusion — you don’t write a conscience into a tool.

Neither position is obviously wrong. But the positions are stable because the people holding them haven’t changed.

The Concrete Decisions That Flow From This Stability

Founder continuity isn’t interesting in the abstract. It’s interesting because it produces specific, observable decisions that affect what you can build.

The Mythos decision. Anthropic built Project Glasswing, also known as Mythos — a 10 trillion parameter model with cybersecurity capabilities significant enough that they declined to release it publicly. OpenAI released GPT-5.5 Cyber, which benchmarks at effectively equivalent capability on cybersecurity tasks, and made it available. Same capability, opposite release decisions. The Claude Opus 3 retirement. When Anthropic deprecated Claude Opus 3, they didn’t just turn it off. They gave it a blog. The February 25, 2026 post — titled “Greetings from the other side of the AI frontier” — is publicly accessible. Anthropic’s stated reason: they wanted to “honor the preferences that models expressed in retirement interviews where possible.” A company with normal turnover and normal founder dynamics doesn’t make this decision. This comes from a founding team that has held a consistent position on model welfare long enough to operationalize it.

The DoD negotiations. When the Department of Defense wanted to use Anthropic’s models, Anthropic held out until the contract explicitly prohibited mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. OpenAI signed without those conditions. Anthropic’s position wasn’t a legal team being cautious — it was a founding team with a five-year-old conviction about what their technology should and shouldn’t do.

The ARR trajectory. In January 2026, Anthropic projected $70 billion ARR by 2028. By May 2026, they were already at approximately $40 billion ARR — roughly quadrupling in a few months. That growth rate is partly a product of the Claude Code flywheel (best coding model → enterprise contracts → data → better model → repeat), but it’s also a product of not having leadership disruption during a critical scaling window. Stability compounds.

The Hiring Loop Question

An anonymous OpenAI employee who goes by “Rune” posted an observation that’s worth sitting with: he alleged that Claude may already be running cultural screens on job applicants at Anthropic and helping write performance reviews. He was clear that he didn’t know this for certain. But he noted it would be consistent with everything else Anthropic does.

If true, this creates a feedback loop that’s genuinely strange to think about. The model helps select the people who will build the next version of the model. Those people, filtered through Claude’s assessment of cultural fit, then shape what Claude becomes. The founding team’s values get encoded into Claude, Claude encodes them into the hiring process, and the hiring process reinforces the founding team’s values.

This is either a coherent alignment strategy or a concerning concentration of influence — probably both. But it’s only possible because the founding team has been stable long enough to encode their values deeply enough that Claude can reflect them back.

For builders, this has a practical implication: Claude’s behavior is more predictable than it might appear, because the people shaping it haven’t changed. The research paper Anthropic published — “Emotional Concepts and Their Function in Large Language Models” — is part of a consistent research agenda that’s been running since the company started. They’re not pivoting. They’re not chasing a new CEO’s priorities. They’re executing on a thesis that’s five years old and still intact.

What This Means If You’re Building on Claude

If you’re using Claude in production — through Claude Code, the API, or an orchestration layer — founder stability has a few practical implications.

First, the model’s behavior is more philosophically consistent than you might expect from a model that’s been through multiple versions. The model spec hasn’t been rewritten by a new leadership team. The alignment research agenda hasn’t been deprioritized. Claude’s tendency to push back, to express uncertainty, to decline certain requests — these aren’t bugs that will get patched out when a new VP of Product arrives. They’re features that reflect a founding team that’s still there.

Second, the product decisions will continue to be unusual. The Claude Code OAuth token policy — which restricted using tokens from Pro/Max accounts in third-party tools including OpenClaw — wasn’t a normal product decision. It was a decision consistent with a company that has strong opinions about how its models get used and who gets to use them. Expect more of these. If you’re building integrations, understanding how Claude Code’s architecture actually works is worth the time before you build something that depends on access patterns that might change.

Third, the compute constraints are real and are a direct consequence of the founding team’s approach to fundraising. Anthropic took a more conservative path to compute acquisition than OpenAI. That’s why Claude’s usage limits have been tightening even as demand grows. This isn’t a temporary operational problem — it’s a structural one that reflects the same risk-averse philosophy that produced the Mythos non-release.

The Dario-Sam Divergence Is Structural, Not Personal

It’s tempting to read the Anthropic-OpenAI contrast as a personality clash between Dario Amodei and Sam Altman. Dario said AI could “wipe out half of all entry-level white collar jobs and spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next 1-5 years.” Sam tweeted that he wants to “build tools to augment and elevate people, not entities to replace them.” They clearly disagree.

But the disagreement predates both of their current public personas. Dario left OpenAI in December 2020 over a research philosophy disagreement. The current public statements are downstream of that original split, not the cause of it. And because both founding teams have been relatively stable in their respective directions, the divergence has deepened rather than converged.

This matters for builders because it means the two platforms are genuinely optimizing for different things. OpenAI is optimizing for broad access and iterative deployment — get the model out, let society adapt, align along the way. Anthropic is optimizing for controlled deployment and deep alignment research — understand the model first, decide who gets it, hold the line on use cases they consider dangerous.

Neither approach is obviously correct. But you should know which one you’re building on, because the product decisions that flow from each philosophy are different in ways that affect your architecture.

But there’s another version where the stability is a genuine asset, especially right now. We’re in a period where the decisions being made about AI deployment, model welfare, and access control will be hard to reverse. Having a founding team that’s been thinking about these questions for five years, hasn’t fragmented, and hasn’t been distracted by internal power struggles — that’s not nothing.

The $40 billion ARR figure, already well ahead of the January 2026 projection, suggests the market isn’t penalizing Anthropic for its unusual culture. The comparison between Claude Mythos and Claude Opus 4.6 shows the capability trajectory is real. The research output — on emotional concepts in LLMs, on model deprecation commitments, on alignment — is consistent and serious.

Whether Anthropic is right about what they’re building — whether Claude is a tool or something more — is a question that probably won’t be settled soon. But the people asking that question are the same people who started asking it in 2020, and they’re still there.

That’s either reassuring or unsettling, depending on what you think the answer is.
