Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan CEO, said he believes “the trillion dollar investment in data centers will make sense.” Larry Fink, BlackRock CEO, went further: “Not only is there not an AI bubble, but there is the opposite. We have supply shortages. Demand is growing much faster than anyone has anticipated.” These aren’t AI boosters or venture capitalists. These are the people whose job is to be skeptical about capital allocation at scale.

The reason they’re saying this connects directly to the physical constraints Carmen Lee described: “Capital is the easy part. Money shows up fast, but money does not equal compute. You need GPUs, power, substations, colo, cooling, and operators. Each link has its own lead time.” A capital bubble is a financing phenomenon. A compute bubble requires every physical bottleneck to clear simultaneously. Those are very different things.

What the Earnings Call Data Actually Shows

Here’s the data point that should recalibrate your priors: on public market earnings calls, companies mention AI “augmenting” workers eight times more often than “substituting” them. That’s an 8:1 ratio, and it runs directly counter to the dominant media framing.

This matters because earnings calls are where executives speak carefully, with legal teams reviewing every word, to audiences who will trade on what they hear. The language companies choose in that context reflects actual operational reality more reliably than press releases or layoff announcements.

The Cloudflare and Coinbase layoffs from the same week illustrate the gap between narrative and reality. Cloudflare laid off 1,100 people — but had hired 2,000 new people just months earlier. That looks more like an overhiring correction than AI displacement. Coinbase’s transaction revenue fell 40% year-over-year. Crypto markets were down; the layoffs followed. Both companies pointed to AI as a factor, and most outlets ran that framing without examining the underlying financials.

This isn’t to say AI has no role in workforce changes. It does. But the reflexive attribution of every layoff to AI automation is producing a distorted picture of where the actual disruption is happening and where it isn’t. The supply chain for a data center buildout is almost entirely physical goods: concrete, steel, copper, fiber optic cable, cooling equipment, transmission infrastructure, backup generators. Thanks to current tax incentives, Fuller argues, most of these materials are being manufactured in the United States, with production concentrated in the old manufacturing heartland — the Rust Belt and the South.

This is a different kind of job creation than the “new categories of services” argument that economists like Alex Emas make about the relational sector. Emas, a Chicago Booth economist, argues in his essay “What Will Be Scarce” that when one sector gets disrupted, surplus flows somewhere rather than dissipating — and that the “relational sector,” where value depends on who provides a service and how, is definitionally resistant to AI substitution. That argument is compelling for understanding white-collar employment trajectories.

But the data center buildout is creating something more immediate and more legible: construction jobs, manufacturing jobs, logistics jobs, electrical work, HVAC installation, fiber pulling. These aren’t speculative future categories. They’re existing trades with existing training pipelines, and the demand for them is accelerating.

Construction unions have recognized this. Rather than opposing data center projects, they’re described as “leading the charge” to align data center construction with local community interests so projects can proceed. That’s a meaningful signal about where organized labor sees the opportunity.

The Timeline Question That Changes Everything

The A16Z piece by David makes a historical argument worth engaging with seriously. The chart of US employment by sector since 1850 shows agriculture falling from nearly 70% of employment to under 5% today — without causing a permanent unemployment crisis. The spreadsheet didn’t eliminate accounting; it shifted employment from bookkeeping clerks toward financial analysts and auditors. Nail salons, pet care, exam prep, and athletic coaching each had fewer than 100,000 workers in 1990 and now employ between 150,000 and 350,000 each.

The historical pattern is consistent: productivity gains in one area create surplus that flows into new categories of work. The question is always about the transition period and its length.

Here’s where the data center buildout changes the calculus. If the AI infrastructure buildout were a two-to-five-year burst of construction activity followed by a plateau, the job creation would be real but temporary. What the supply shortage data suggests instead is a sustained, likely decade-long project to build the compute infrastructure required for the next phase of the global economy.

Fink’s comment about supply shortages and demand growing faster than anticipated isn’t just a market observation — it’s a statement about the duration of the buildout. If demand for compute continues to outpace supply for a decade, then the construction and manufacturing jobs being created now aren’t a temporary boom. They’re a structural shift in where certain categories of employment live.
