Add Thumbnail to Video

Set a video's thumbnail: embedded as its cover art, and optionally as its opening frames

About this capability

  • Almost everything that shows a video without a poster shows its first frame (a web page's video, link previews, the platform's own), so a video that fades in from black has a black thumbnail
  • Pass the thumbnail as `imageUrl` (a designed cover) or as `at`, a moment of the video in seconds
  • The thumbnail is always embedded as the video's cover art, its streams copied as they are; desktop players and file browsers show it, browsers and social platforms don't
  • `asFirstFrame` also shows it for the video's first 0.2 seconds, fitted to the frame over black, so first-frame thumbnails are it too; that re-encodes the video, keeping its length and audio
  • Returns the video as an mp4, and the thumbnail as `thumbnailUrl` (a png) for a web page's poster or a platform that takes a cover image
