Klein is not an AI accelerationist. He’s not a venture capitalist with a portfolio to protect. He’s a political commentator with a long track record of taking technology’s social costs seriously. When someone like that starts pushing back on the doom narrative, you pay attention.
The essay’s central claim is deceptively simple: mass AI unemployment probably isn’t coming, but that’s not actually good news. The scenario we should be worried about isn’t 80 million people losing their jobs at once. It’s 8 million people losing their jobs quietly, in ways that are too diffuse to force a political response.
That distinction matters more than almost anything else being written about AI and work right now.
The Argument Klein Is Actually Making
The doom narrative has a structural problem. It’s too dramatic to be useful.
When people imagine AI displacing workers, they tend to picture a cliff — a moment when the machines arrive and the jobs disappear. That framing makes for compelling headlines, but it’s probably wrong about how labor market disruptions actually work. Klein points to a better analogy: the China trade shock.

The best estimates put job losses from Chinese import competition at around 2 million American jobs. That’s a small number in the context of a US economy where roughly 5 million people are hired and 5 million leave jobs every single month. The scale was too small to force a wholesale restructuring. The affected workers were too geographically concentrated to build a national coalition. The problem was real and the response was inadequate.
Klein’s argument is that AI displacement could follow exactly this pattern. “A world where AI displaces 8 million workers might be harder to handle than a world where it displaces 80 million workers,” he writes. This is a genuinely uncomfortable idea. Why Economists Are More Skeptical Than AI Labs
Klein’s essay draws heavily on a piece by University of Chicago economist Alex Imms called “What Will Be Scarce,” which applied Jevons’ paradox to AI. The paradox, originally observed in 19th-century coal consumption, holds that when a resource becomes more efficient to use, total consumption of that resource tends to go up, not down. Make coal engines more efficient and you don’t use less coal — you use more, because now it’s economical to run engines in places where it wasn’t before.
Imms argues the same logic applies to AI-assisted work. When the cost of producing a piece of analysis, a line of code, or a first draft drops dramatically, you don’t produce less of those things — you produce more, because now it’s worth doing things that weren’t worth doing before. Ezra gives a personal example: when he started his podcast a decade ago, he was its only researcher. Now he has a full team. Has that made his job easier? “Not in the least,” he writes. “I spend far more time researching and prepping because they bring me so much more to absorb and consider.”
This is the Jevons effect in action. More capability doesn’t mean less work. It means more ambitious work becomes possible, and ambitious people find ways to fill the new capacity.
Klein’s broader point is that economists — the people who actually study labor markets — are considerably more skeptical of the mass unemployment scenario than the AI labs themselves. And there are good reasons to be skeptical of the labs’ predictions. They have IPOs on the horizon. They’re trying to unwind post-COVID hiring binges. They may, as Klein puts it, “understand neural nets better than they understand labor markets, or they might have bought too deeply into their own marketing materials.”

Sequoia partner Konstantin Beuler flagged data from Citadel Securities showing that software engineering job postings are up 18% from an inflection point in May 2025. Software engineering is supposed to be the most AI-exposed occupation — the one where AI is most directly competing with human workers. And yet demand is accelerating, not collapsing. Federal Reserve data shows software engineering jobs at their highest point since November 2023.
The Wall Street Journal, citing a LinkedIn analysis of job posting data, reported that AI created 640,000 jobs between 2023 and 2025 in the US. These are new white-collar positions — head of AI, AI engineer, and roles that didn’t exist five years ago.
Stripe Atlas hit 100,000 all-time incorporations, with Q1 2026 up 130% year-over-year. Startup formation is accelerating, not contracting. If AI were primarily destroying economic opportunity, you’d expect the opposite.
None of this means displacement isn’t happening. OpenAI and University of Pennsylvania researchers estimate that about 80% of US workers could have at least 10% of their tasks affected by language models, and maybe one in five could see half their tasks affected. Anthropic’s Economic Index found that 49% of jobs have already had at least a quarter of their tasks performed using Claude. Microsoft researchers looked at 200,000 Bing Copilot conversations and found the most common AI work is gathering information and writing — not exotic edge cases, but the daily bread of knowledge work.
The tasks are being affected. The jobs, so far, are not disappearing at the rate the doom narrative predicted. The question is whether that gap is temporary — a lag before the cliff — or whether it reflects something more durable about how labor markets absorb technological change. It’s a question worth sitting with, especially as models keep improving. The capability jump between successive model generations has been steep enough that assumptions made even six months ago about what AI can and can’t do are already outdated.

There’s a useful frame for thinking about this that doesn’t require you to pick a side in the macro debate.
Think about travel agents. Expedia didn’t erase that profession overnight. Online booking changed the economics of the routine work first — the simple flight-and-hotel combinations that anyone could do. But if you looked at employment data in the early years of online booking, you wouldn’t have seen a dramatic drop. The visible break came later, during downturns, when the industry was forced to admit what had already changed. The Elasticity Question
The most intellectually honest version of the optimistic argument comes from Merzmik Ahmed of Emergence AI, who drew a distinction that Klein’s essay gestures at but doesn’t fully develop: elastic versus inelastic demand.
Some work expands when costs fall. The Jevons paradox applies to elastic demand. It doesn’t apply to inelastic demand. Which means the optimistic story about AI creating more work than it destroys is true for some categories of work and false for others. The question is which category your work falls into — and that’s a question that requires honest self-assessment, not macro statistics.

But the aggregate always looks fine until it doesn’t, and the communities that get hurt in a diffuse displacement event don’t show up in the aggregate until it’s too late.
The China trade shock is the right analogy. Two million jobs sounds small. It was catastrophic for the people who lost them and the places where they lived. The policy response was inadequate because the scale wasn’t dramatic enough to force action. If AI displaces workers in a similarly diffuse pattern — a few thousand here, a few thousand there, concentrated in specific roles and geographies — the political economy of response will be just as inadequate.
Klein is right that this is the scenario we’re least prepared for. The doom narrative, paradoxically, might be easier to handle. A genuine mass unemployment event would force a wholesale restructuring of how we think about work, income, and social support. Targeted displacement gets absorbed into the background noise and ignored.
The people who should be paying attention to this aren’t just policymakers. That layer is being compressed. The question is whether you’re positioned in the part of your role that expands when costs fall, or the part that gets capped.

That’s not a comfortable message. But it’s a more useful one than either the doom narrative or the everything-will-be-fine reassurance. Klein’s essay is valuable precisely because it refuses both.
The macro data isn’t matching the doom narrative. That’s genuinely good news. It’s also not a reason to stop paying attention to what’s happening inside the jobs that are still showing up in the employment statistics — because the travel agent pattern suggests the reckoning, when it comes, arrives faster than anyone expected.
