Anthropic’s venture is anchored in finance. Blackstone is the largest alternative asset manager on the planet. Goldman Sachs is a founding partner. The rest of the investor list — Apollo, General Atlantic, GIC, Leonard Green — reads like a who’s who of private equity and sovereign wealth. These are firms that manage trillions in assets and have deep relationships with the kinds of enterprises that have “weird and complicated” problems: hospitals, banks, governments, insurance companies.

OpenAI’s development company is reportedly broader. The framing is more about deploying AI everywhere at scale — manufacturing, healthcare, general enterprise — rather than leading with a specific vertical. Nineteen investors at a $10B valuation suggests a wider net.

So the investor split isn’t accidental. It reflects two different go-to-market strategies, and the investors are essentially voting on which strategy they think wins. SemiAnalysis — generally considered well-sourced on infrastructure and revenue questions — reported that Anthropic’s ARR exploded from $9B to over $44B in 2026, doubling roughly every six weeks. Analyst Ming Li did the math: that’s approximately $96 million in ARR added per day. For comparison, AWS took 13 years to reach $35B in annual revenue. Salesforce took over 20 years to pass $20B.

The margin story is equally striking. SemiAnalysis reported Anthropic’s inference margins at 70%, up from 38% the prior year. That’s not just revenue growth — that’s the unit economics of the business improving dramatically as the company scales. The investors in OpenAI’s development company are presumably betting on a different thesis — broader deployment, different verticals, different go-to-market.

If both theses are right, both ventures succeed. If the financial sector turns out to need the specialized approach, Anthropic wins that vertical and OpenAI’s broader approach struggles there. If the deployment problem turns out to be more universal, OpenAI’s scale advantage matters more.

The interesting scenario is if the two ventures start competing directly for the same customers.
